Tatoka Iyanke...

2007-12-15

Chief Running Antelope (Tatoka Iyanke)was a Hunkpapa Chief who was one of four to serve as an advisor to Sitting Bull (Tatanka Yotanka). He was a revered Lakota Souix orator and warrior.

He rose to power as a Hunkpapa Chief in 1851. It was his feeling that the indians must reach a compromise with the whites. It was this position that eventually lead to his distancing himself from Sitting Bull.

As time passed, Tatoka Iyanke, regretted his descison to sign the treaty of 1886 and longed for the days when his people were free.

He died sometime between June of 1896 and June of 1897. In 1899 his image appeared on the five dollar silver certificate.
